Carbon Reduction Plan 2024

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been produced in accordance with the guidance issued by the UK Government Cabinet Office as Procurement Policy Note 06/21: Taking account of Carbon Reduction Plans in the procurement of major government contracts.

Building Management Systems (BMS) are increasingly vital in the UK’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net zero by 2050. BMS can help optimise energy use in buildings, leading to significant carbon footprint reductions. This is particularly relevant given the UK’s commitment to reducing emissions by 50% by 2032 and 75% by 2037, as outlined in the Climate Change Act.

Commitment To Achieving Net Zero

Kernow Controls Limited is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year Emissions 2024-25 (calendar year) by total tCO₂e

There is no prior emissions reporting or creation of a new baseline due to substantial organisational change and restructuring.

  • Scope 1 – Direct Emissions = 0.0
  • Scope 2 – Purchased Energy = 1.24
  • Scope 3 – Indirect Value Chain* = 6.96
  • Total Emissions = 8.20 tCO₂e

Current Emissions Reporting Fiscal Year 2024 by total tCO₂e

The following presents the updated emissions calculations for Fiscal Year 2024 (6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025), with adjustments to the original reporting to ensure accuracy based on available data and 2024 DEFRA emission factors.

  • Scope 1 – Direct Emissions = ~6.41 tCO₂e
  • Scope 2 – Purchased Energy = ~0.539 tCO₂e
  • Scope 3 – Indirect Value Chain* = ~203.26 tCO₂e
  • Total Emissions = ~210.209 tCO₂e per year

Emissions Reduction Targets

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets. We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next 3 years to 150 tCO2e by 2027. This is an estimated reduction in the region of 30%. Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph to the left showing Carbon Reduction: Projected vs. Actual.

Additional Details Relating to Baseline Emissions Calculations

In Progress / Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures have been ongoing or completed since 2010:

  • Lead scalable IoT integration for remote, cost-effective estate monitoring and reduced field travel.
  • Promote the carbon-saving benefits of BMS to clients, and report performance metrics.
  • Hiring local operatives ensures a fast response and minimal commuting time.
  • Support hybrid work using local staff, cloud-based remote tools, and hotdesking.
  • Minimise travel emissions with public transport, car sharing, source locally to boost the economy.
  • Reduce material use in projects, reuse packaging, recycle site waste, and eliminate single-use plastics.
  • Redesigned company website for a better user experience and navigation.
  • Automated workflows, cloud-based systems, and paperless solutions.

Future Initiatives Toward Carbon Reduction

In the future, we hope to implement further measures such as:

  • Maximise renewables use, including sourcing renewable energy for operations.
  • Reduce business travel by encouraging remote meetings and video calls.
  • Implement energy-saving measures, such as smart thermostats.
  • Prioritise suppliers actively reducing emissions in their operations.
  • Eco-driving guidance, route optimisation, shift to electric vans/cars.
  • Source or install EV charging points near Falmouth office for staff use.
  • Upskill staff on carbon literacy, energy efficiency, system optimisation.
  • Track emissions yearly, align with SECR or PPN 06/21 (for government suppliers).
  • Promote continuous improvement through innovation and environmental best practices.
